Self-Assessments: Gambling Addiction

Gambling addiction is a process addiction, and is characterised by compulsive participation in gambling activities such as gaming (pokies, cards), betting (racing, sports) lotteries (lotto, scratchies) or speculation (“deals”, stocks and shares).

People come to depend on these gambling activities to feel better in some way, and to experience cravings for them, just as happens with a substance addiction. As the addiction develops the person continues to gamble in spite of the resulting negative consequences such as significant financial problems, relationship difficulties, or legal issues.

The goal of our gambling addiction self-test is not to provide a definitive answer as to whether you or someone you care about has a gambling addiction. It is an opportunity to raise your awareness about the impact that gambling is having on your life, or the life of someone you care about.

As you read each of the following statements take your time to think about the answer, then click on the button if you believe it applies to you. Only you will be seeing the results of this self-test so take the opportunity to be completely honest with yourself. To minimize or deny behaviours or consequences is one of the symptoms of addiction.

South Pacific Private offers free confidential assessments if you wish to discuss the results of your test. Please call us 24/7 on 1800 063 332.
