8 Steps to Stay on Track in your Recovery

In Narcotics Anonymous they state, “The three indispensable principles for Recovery are honesty, open-mindedness and willingness”, of which honesty comes first. The only way to truly give yourself the best chance in Recovery is to be honest.

In Step One at SPP, we have the opportunity to be honest. For some of you this might have been the first time you were truly honest about how much you did, the frequency, and with whom. We are not talking the amended version here, but the real deal.

Through honesty you can look at the consequences of your addiction and its impact your health, family, and finances. Honesty should have been the driving force behind your aftercare plan, with the key goal of remaining abstinent in Recovery. Your aftercare plan is an essential part of your Recovery and let us not underestimate, it is there to save your life.

Be honest with yourself now and reflect on how many of the activities in your aftercare plan you are keeping. If you have deviated from your plan, the question is why? Why have you moved away from a plan that at one point you thought was crucial for you to get well? When did you give yourself permission to be different?

This is where open-mindedness and willingness come in. You cannot graft a new idea to a close mind, and if “our best thinking got us here” we need some new ideas to get us back on to the road towards Recovery. If you want to avoid a relapse, it’s time to go back to your Aftercare Plan. It takes humility, ego deflation, and a willingness to go to any length to get well, and start your new life.

Here are a few steps to help get you back on track:

  1. Follow your continuing care plan
  2. Attend SPP day programs
  3. Join a 12 Step Fellowship. Note we said join. Even if you watch and listen, you will be inspired by the power of other’s Recovery stories.
  4. Get a sponsor. It will be hard, but it might be the phone call that saves your life
  5. Work the steps. Don’t just read them, work them
  6. Get a therapist and continue working on your functional adult skills
  7. Open your mind to finding a power greater than you
  8. Re-connect with your sponsor
