24 Nov Recovery: Freedom from our Addictions Book Review
Recovery Freedom from our Addictions By Russell Brand
In this fearless and inspiring book, Russell Brand takes his readers on a confronting, honest and endearingly refreshing journey of the 12 Step Program.
He starts by stating his qualification for writing the book, “my qualification for writing this book is not that I am better than you, it’s that I am worse. I am an addict, addicted to drugs, alcohol, sex, money, love and fame.” And from there, he reveals his own journey and his own flaws in an unflinching and assertive tone and invites us, the reader, to do the same. Russell takes you on an expedition of self-actualization and wonder. This book takes no prisoners and offers no hiding place. It’s astounding and gratifying in its honesty.
The 12 Step Program has given Russell Brand freedom from all addictions and he states that it will do the same for you. The book starts by describing the 12 Steps, and dissecting them one by one using language that brings them to life and makes them tangible for everyone. From there, he offers useful questions for self-reflection and takes us to task on the 12 Steps, chapter by chapter.
This honesty in this book is disarming and the level of brutal self-reflection he achieves in his writing, and clearly in his path to coping with various addictions, was both moving and inspiring. I highly recommend this book, I couldn’t put it down. Page by page I was entirely engrossed and his approach to the 12 Steps makes them accessible but, in his own words, essential for everyone in Recovery.
