Professional Program

 Saturday, 12th September

 8.30   Registration
 9.00   Welcome
9.30   Session 1: Effective strategies for treating the addicted family
In this session you will identify the family dynamics of addiction and the critical family dynamics where mental health and chemical dependency occur. You will also have the chance to practice therapeutic strategies that are crucial to family healing, and learn how children suffer developmental delays as well as tools that can assist children in mastering their developmental tasks.
 10.30   Morning Tea
11.00   Session 2: Compassion fatigue and how post secondary PTSD impacts a therapist and their family
Compassion fatigue is often diagnosed as post secondary PTSD. Therapists can absorb the trauma of clients in ways that cross into their personal lives, while diminishing their efficacy in their work with others. This session will demonstrate methods to counteract compassion fatigue and show how to maintain vision, purpose and balance in life.
 12.30   Lunch
1.30   Session 3: Narcissistic wounds and the challenge of recovery (Strategies for healing)
Many addicts suffer from false pride, entitlement and grandiosity that unfortunately will not disappear with sobriety, but will interfere with recovery. This session examines the relational consequences of narcissism and offers tools to clinicians to recognize this destructive dynamic in treatment and recovery.
 3.00   Afternoon Tea
 3.30

Session 4: When words are not enough – Expressive Therapy Modalities: connecting Mind, Body and Spirit
In order to alter beliefs and behaviour, we need to integrate our knowledge with our bodies, our minds and our spirit. In this session, participants will practice methods of healing that involve experiential learning.
