Medical and Nursing Students Join South Pacific Private’s Teaching Progra -14th July 2014

South Pacific Private is now currently involved in training nursing students from the Sydney Adventist Medical School as part of the University of Sydney.

As of October 2013 South Pacific Private began to train student doctors from the Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical School of The University of Sydney. As of April 2014, we are now also delighted to announce that we are engaged as a teaching hospital for nursing students in addition to doctors.

Book Review - A day without Pain, Mel Pohl, MD -20th May 2014

Mel Pohl, MD, is vice president of medical affairs and Medical Director of Las Vegas Recovery Centre (LVRC).  He was a major force in developing the LVRC Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program.  He is a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (FASM) and is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine – among many other things. 

He was also been listed on the “Best Doctors in America” list for 2011-2012 for the second year in a row.

Pain, Addiction and the significant increase in the use of pharmaceutical opioids -20th May 2014

The significant increase in the use of pharmaceutical opioids for the treatment of non-cancer pain and associated related increases in dependency and deaths has led to a lot of concern, particularly in the US.

The figures are alarming. Sales of opioid analgesics in the US increased fourfold between 1999 and 2010. In 2008 more than 14,000 deaths were related to the misuse of prescription medications, the vast majority prescription opioids.

Towards Healthy Shame -19th May 2014

What is shame?

Shame is the trademark of dysfunctional families.

It comes with addictive families, families with problems and secrets, families whose ancestors had addictions, problems or secrets.

The words are a spell that others cast on us and that we learn to cast on ourselves. The spell says: what you did isn’t okay, who you are isn’t okay and nothing you do will change that. Shame on you.

Good Grief - Is there such a thing? -08th April 2014

Recently my family suffered the tragic loss of my mother in law, who sadly fell down some stairs at my Husband’s 50th birthday party.  She was a fit and energetic lady, who sadly never regained consciousness after the fall. This has been a shocking time and a period of grief that was so raw and painful, words cannot convey.

Another Chance at Life -08th April 2014

This month, SPP was delighted to have a chance to chat with a former patient of South Pacific Private who is this year celebrating his 17th year clean and in Recovery. “As a former patient of South Pacific Private in 1996 I would like to recommend their program and thank all of their wonderful staff. When I left I was well on my way to Recovery and am happy to report that I have been clean and sober ever since. In fact, I am soon to celebrate my 17th birthday of years clean since my time at South Pacific Private.
