Treating Nicotine Addiction

Research has shown that smoking complicates and exacerbates mental illness and its treatment.

As a result, South Pacific Private has been a smoke free facility since 2012 and is one of the few facilities treating nicotine addiction. Click here to find out more.

South Pacific Private supports patients to quit smoking as part of their inpatient treatment plan and encourages remaining smoke free as part of any continuing care / longer term recovery plan. The multi-disciplinary team provides not only psychiatric and therapeutic support but also offers break-out group options for those addicted to nicotine.

Nicotine withdrawal symptoms are caused by the brain response to lack of nicotine in the blood stream and brain and withdrawal causes relapses in the first few weeks after quitting smoking.

These symptoms can be strong and, whilst South Pacific Private does provide Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), the team also recommends that all admissions are prepared in advance by commencing NRT immediately. The team advise that you seek a GP's advice pre-admission and commence NRT two week's prior to admission.

As mentioned, South Pacific Private advocate Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) as a way to reduce and stop nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Using the proper combination and right doses of Nicotine Patches and Nicotine supplement should totally reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Research has shown that you are more likely to quit smoking if you can stop nicotine withdrawal symptoms, in combination with psychological therapy (as provided at South Pacific Private).
